I’ve made 10 paintings and I’m booked in for a solo exhibition at Kingfisher Gallery in March of 2012. Seems like a long way off doesn’t it? But it means, I have 16 months to paint another 20 or more oil paintings, and with teaching part-time at the Fremantle Arts Centre and a few other projects along the way, I’m sure March 2012 will be here in no time at all.
Here is one of the paintings I’ve done. You can see them all on my website, go to www.shanajames.com and click on Artwork and then on preview of 2012 exhibition.
People sometimes ask me where I get my ideas from, so I thought I would use this blog to talk about the ideas behind the pictures as I make them. This work is different from previous work, they are looser and more painterly but the people in them are more realistically drawn. To achieve this I am working from a model for the people, often my sister Cara or sometimes I set up a tripod and take a photo of myself to use as a reference. In my previous work I mostly drew people from my imagination which gives them a different look eg this next painting which I did in 2007 for Precipitate – an exhibition held in the foyer of the QV1 building in the city. You can also see more work like this on my website.
